Pulcino 2015

PULCINO-II-small

Calling all tricksters, flimflammers, and fire-eaters; all cardsharps, storytellers, rogues, and diamond-toothed dreamers: the Fox & Beggar Theater invites you once again to Pulcino, our tantalizing Day of the Dead carnival.

Presenting hot jazz, Django swing, electronica, reggae, and Latin music to warm you up, Pulcino will also feature live facepainting, dancers, circus and fire performances, food vendors, and twelve unbelievable altars designed by local artists…not to mention that we’ll be teaming up with our favorite circus monkeys over at Hi-Wire Brewing to offer you a full menu of Hi-Wire beers all night long. It’s an event not to be missed.

Dress up in your funeral finery, paint a skull on your face (or let us do it for you), and come on down to the Bywater for a legendary night.

THE ALTARS

“SANGUINE MOON” by Asheville Full Moon Gathering
October full moon is a time of harvest and hunting, the draining of blood and storing of cellars. This altar will represent the abundance of fall, the cycles of nature, and the thin line between life and death, which bleed into each other so very neatly.

THE MUSIC

JUAN BENAVIDES GROUP blends traditional and new Flamenco and Middle Eastern styles with a modern soul/rock edge. Founder, Juan Benavides, hails from Bogota, Colombia. He studied flamenco guitar in Spain and toured extensively throughout the US. His music has been featured on several Putumayo collections. Oud player, Aaron Kacmarek, wandered the world from Senegal to India exploring and incorporating some of the oldest musical traditions in the world. Native Colombian, Juan David de Narvaez, comes from a long line of musicians, and after immigrating to the US focused his efforts on the cajon. Asheville native, vocalist Whitney Moore, spent four years studying and performing in Mexico and Spain and brings a touch of blue-eyed soul to her interpretation of Latin styles. Ryan Oslance plays drum kit primarily with avant-garde progressive rock band, The Ahleuchatistas, although he honed his hidden talent for latin grooves while traveling in Spain. The result of their collaboration is a fascinating musical exploration that begins in Andalusia and encompasses the rhythmic and melodic variety of a surprising array of influences from all corners of the globe.

It more or less took an act of Jah to bring the DUB KARTEL together. On January 12, 2010 a devastating earthquake struck in Haiti. After the Haiti earthquake a group of allstar Asheville reggae and ska musicians decided to do a fund raiser benefit for Haitian relief. Bringing together Agent Ishi (Strut), Coleslaw (Gnomebirds), Mike W. (Shining Rock, Natural Healing), Jeremy S.(Natural Healing), Tablesaw (Shining Rock, Cosmic Wind ) Horn players Coutney Hall, Sean Springer and JP Furnas(Common Foundation), from this initial benefit show the seeds for Dub Kartel were sown. Dub Kartel pays tribute to the golden era of Jamacian music. Drawing on the tradion of Studio One, Treasure Isle and Dub luminaries like King Tubby and Scientist, DK brings a classic roots tradition into the modern era.

ONE LEG UP performs a vibrant mixture of upbeat Gypsy Jazz, Latin, Swing and original jazz compositions and is a favorite of club, concert, and festival stages throughout the southeastern United States. OLU formed in 2003 as a “String Swing” band in the style of famed French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Propelled by their excellent self-produced debut recording “Gypsy Blue,” they soon won critical acclaim for their “hot club” prowess and were tapped to back up award-winning Spanish guitarist Pere Soto on some of his 2005 U.S. tour dates. Over the years, O.L.U. has broadened its repertoire to include fresh arrangements of Django classics, vocal harmonies, original compositions, and innovative adaptations of classic jazz numbers in the French “hot club” and American “big band” styles. Now more than just a Django band, their latest recording “Pere La Chaise” is a music mix that is danceable and accessible. One Leg Up continues to attract a growing, varied, and enthusiastic fan base with music that always swings.

Ritual dancing by VIOLETLUNA

A ritual of life and death
Building an altar through trance and dance
To remember who we are
To remember why we are here
Honoring our ancestry
